BT Wholesale is a wide-reaching part of BT, encompassing Wholesale fixed, Ventures MNO and MVNO and Media and Broadcast, as well as special services including our 999 emergency services. This means there are a lot of outstanding individuals working hard to ensure we deliver the best solutions to our partners.
At BT Wholesale, we’re proud of our people and want you to be able to put a face to what we do. We spoke to Paul Beacham, Senior Manager, Data Networking Portfolios at BT Wholesale and BT Enterprise to give you the lowdown on his role, Hope United and what’s important to him inside and outside of the Wholesale team.
What do you do at BT?
“I’ve been working in telecoms for over 20 years now and my experience has been built across a variety of key roles from product management, business/market development, marketing, innovation, account management and sales. Currently though, I’m responsible for leading and delivering BT Wholesale’s Data Connectivity portfolio strategy to create what is recognised as market -eading Ethernet and Optical portfolios in the UK wholesale market.
“A big part of my role is making sure our partners and their customers all have the choice, flexibility and access to a wide portfolio across Ethernet and Optical. From Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) to Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SoGEA) and EAD it’s about understanding what infrastructure is available to support new digital initiatives intended to help businesses. What is also critical is how we evolve these portfolios with automation and digital self-serve capabilities such as APIs as well as offering flexibility through multi-service access and hybrid capabilities”
What are your thoughts around Hope United?
BT has formed Hope United, bringing together top footballers like Marcus Rashford and Rio Ferdinand to address the issue of online hate – something 1 in 10 of us have experienced.
“The BT Wholesale leadership team are proud to stand together for hope, not hate, whichever segment they support. I believe that social media should be a place for hope but was never expecting such a campaign to be immediately and deeply resonant with our customers and our colleagues, so it’s been incredible to see.
“In the channel community we were joined by a number of partners within 24 hours of our clarion call to condemn racism and hate speech in social media, triggered by the sad events of the final Euro game. I feel this highlights the unique platform in the industry and society we have to make a difference and use technology to connect for good.”
What do you do outside of work?
“Outside of work, I love to travel. My favourite travel experience so far has probably been doing a 3-week Californian road trip. I went from exploring San Francisco including cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge, to whale watching in Monterey Bay, seeing the Giant Redwoods in Sequoia National Park and then spending time in Calabasas and Malibu in LA! Doing the Golden Triangle in India was an amazing experience as well. As it’s mine and my wife’s 20th Wedding anniversary next month, I also have to say that getting married overlooking the Caldera in Santorini, Greece was quite spectacular. So many memories! I can’t wait to get back to it.
“But with three children and then a global pandemic I’ve not got up to much travel recently, other than going from A to B in ‘Dad’s taxi service’. I’ve certainly been kept busy though because we moved house during the last lockdown. Somehow, we have managed to decorate the whole house in 6 months – including getting the sledgehammer out on a couple of walls for a bit of a ‘redesign’…”
