Home Office to use new data handling guide

A new guide to handling personal data is to be used by the Home Office to improve security.

The department will be able to classify the sensitivity of information and decide whether data handling processes are adequate or need further attention.

Established by the British Computer Society (BSC) and the Information Security Awareness Forum, the Personal Data Guardianship Code was launched in London yesterday (June 1st).

It is designed to be a "toolkit" for ensuring best practice when handling data and is a short document written in easy-to-understand English.

Louise Bennett, chair of the BCS Security Forum, said: "The consultation work we've undertaken in that time exposed the need for practical help in changing culture to embed good data guardianship principles in all organisations."

Symantec recently warned enterprises to be aware of higher levels of spam and increasingly intense attacks.<br/>
