It has been revealed that a fifth of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are unintentionally breaching the Data Protection Act.
Conducted by the BSI, research found that 18 per cent of the 500 respondents did not know whether or not they were compliant with the legislation.
A further 65 per cent of SMEs admitted they did not provide staff with any training about data protection, while half had no single designated employee in charge of the matter.
Mike Low, director of standards for BSI, said: "These organisations are handling vast amounts of personal information on a daily basis and while it is encouraging that some already have appropriate data protection measures in place this survey clearly shows that there is still a long way to go."
In other enterprise technology news, IDC has urged all SMEs to be make use of their enterprise resource planning systems and keep them updated as often as possible.<br/>
