Netbooks not just for budget users

Netbooks provide a practical and portable option, not just a cheap one, according to an industry expert.

PR manager at Dell, Ellen Murphy, said that netbooks have proved popular because they serve a number of purposes and are cost-effective.

An article recently published in the Guardian revealed that netbook sales have declined sequentially when compared with notebooks, which are becoming slimmer and being fitted with longer life batteries.

However, Ms Murphy still believes that netbooks have a functionality that is not necessarily in competition with notebooks and traditional laptops.

She said: "Some people just buy them for their kids to use, someone in college would buy one as a secondary that they can just carry around."

Ms Murphy commented that the recession helped the early success of netbooks, but asserted that it was not the sole reason that they were launched.

"As far as the timing went, the technology was there and they came out and [the recession] happened at the same time, so I don't think netbooks came out as a result of the recession," she stated.<br/>
