Women think IT is "a geeky profession"

Many women are put off entering the IT industry because they view it as being a boring and "geeky" profession, according to one organisation.

The BCS Young Professionals Group (YPG) thinks that television shows often portray the sector as being one which involves sitting around in an office all day typing coding.

However, the group claims that this is not the case and it is really about "inventing all these really cool things that everybody uses on a daily basis".

Jennifer Hewitt, chairman of BCS YPG, said that as increasing numbers or people are becoming reliant upon the internet, it is revolutionising the way they live.

She continued: "Some parents are sort of wise as well to the fact that IT is quite a profitable business and a place where you can potentially earn quite a good salary being an IT professional."

The Women and Digital Life study revealed that 58 per cent of women are spending more time on the internet since the onset of the recession.<br/>
