Interactivity key to engaging young workers

Web 2.0 technologies could be the key to engaging and communicating with young workers, one expert has suggested.

Head of HR practice development at The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), Vanessa Robinson, said that companies need to look at specific ways to keep their work force motivated.

Perks, such as a pension, are not universal and do not appeal to younger workers, she claimed.

A recent study published by Badenoch & Clark revealed that almost 50 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds feel undervalued in their job and one of the reasons is the lack of interactivity, according to Ms Robinson.

She said: "Maybe what is needed here is to recognise there are possibly generation differences and people need to think about what they need to do to engage with people in different stages of their career."

"We have done work around web 2.0 technology and again [we found] you can communicate and engage with particularly [the] younger generation through web 2.0 technology," she added.

Web 2.0 technologies could be used to engage workers through the use of online discussions and forums, according to Ms Robinson.
