Global server sales at lowest for 12 years

Server sales have fallen to the lowest level since analysis began 12 years ago.

Market Watcher IDC has revealed that in the first three months of 2009, the value of the industry fell by 24.5 per cent to $9.9 billion (£6.1 billion).

It is thought that the decline has come as the recession is forcing customers to re-think their spending plans and where their money is going.

However, IDC has predicted that these buying habits are only a short-term thing and the market is likely to pick up again.

Matt Eastwood, IDC group vice president of Enterprise Platforms, said: "Server demand will improve in the second half of the year as customers begin to rebuild their IT capabilities in advance of a meaningful economic recovery in 2010."

It is not all doom and gloom however, as Internet Retailer last week revealed that the recession is likely to see online purchases pick up.<br/>
