Many businesses are not taking advantage of the IT which is available to them and only update their systems when there has been a failure.
This is the opinion of Ganesh Selvarajah, an adviser at Business Link, who has discovered that many businesses do not use "posh email services" or smartphones such as BlackBerry's.
He furthered that enterprises often wait until their hardware can no longer cope with the demand placed on it or applications get "resource hungry" before they upgrade.
"That's usually what forces the upgrades – they don't normally go in for regular system reviews," Mr Selvarajah continued.
Instead, the economic climate has forced companies to assess their cashflow and establish where the money is most urgently needed.
