BT calls homeworkers back to the office

BT has told 200 of its homeworking employees that they must return to the office.

The announcement comes after the telecoms group reported a pre-tax loss of £134 million for the first quarter of the year.

It is also thought that BT wants to better monitor the performance of its employees in an attempt to improve the output of its IT services unit and ensure maximum profitability.

The Times reports that as the recession continues, unions fear other telecoms firms could be forced to follow suit and put a stop to flexible working schemes.

A spokesman for the Communication Workers Union said: "This is fairly ironic, given that BT has recently received an award for its gender diversity and worklife practices."

In other BT news, the firm has revealed plans to help small to medium-sized enterprises boost business using social networking sites.<br/>
