UK Broadband experience depends on location

The British broadband experience fluctuates significantly from area to area, according to new research.

In a study commissioned by the BBC, three million UK homes were found to receive a less than 2mb per second service, with one per cent of homes completely unable to receive a broadband connection.

Alex Salter, the co-founder of broadband website SamKnows, told the BBC: "We had assumed that these notspots were in remote parts of the countryside. That may be where the most vocal campaigners are but there is a high incidence of them in commuter belts."

He went on to say that the faltering service which many still receive has wider implications for businesses as well as leisure users.<br/>"It prevents flexible working. If the problem is fixed it means a lot more people could work from home which offers a very real way to improve society," he added.

The findings cast doubt over the government's Digital Britain plan, which promises to ensure every home in Britain will receive at least a 2mbps connection by 2012.<br/>
