The internet will become the major platform for home entertainment as more advanced IT services are tailored to be affordable for consumers.
That is according to Techwatch.co.uk, an online publication dedicated to digital television, which suggested that the rise of the internet in this sphere is "inevitable".
Brian Turner, executive editor of the website, claimed that there are still technological barriers to be overcome before internet protocol (IP) TV services captivate the mainstream.
However, he added: "A convergence between TV broadcasting and internet distribution is something that has been on the cards since the turn of the decade.
Mr Turner maintained that one of the biggest limiting factors to this point has been the relatively low speeds of consumer internet connections, a situation which is now changing as high-speed broadband begins to proliferate.
While advanced high-definition IPTV services will require people to subscribed to superfast broadband in the future, a recent survey by BroadbandChoices.co.uk indicated 66 per cent do not currently feel inclined to pay more for faster speeds.
