Telecoms and networking 'transformed in 2008'

There was a transformation in the telecoms and networking industries during 2008, one website has said in a review of the year.

Furthermore, there could be even more changes in 2009 as consumers' and businesses' reliance on being constantly connected continues to increase, according to vnunet.com.

Over the past year there has been more and more demand for media sharing sites such as YouTube and BBC iPlayer.

Because of this increase, some ISPs began demanding that the BBC should pay for some of the necessary infrastructure upgrades.

Similarly, businesses became increasingly reliant on broadband connections due to the growth of hosted applications.

"These have grown to encompass every facet of the business, from end-user applications such as email, office tools and customer relationship management, to back-end systems such as security, backup and web hosting," vnunet.com writes.

Broadband.co.uk believes that some ISPs may struggle to cope with the demand for BBC iPlayer over the Christmas period.<br/>
