Data loss causes internet firms 'to consider information retention policies'

The number of high-profile data loss stories which have been making the headlines in recent times means that people are now wary of companies holding their personal information, it has been claimed.

According to the Oxford Internet Institute, pressure has been put on search engines by the European Union's Data Protection Authority to reduce the amount of data they are holding.

These internet companies are now under a great deal of legal pressure and unwelcome publicity.

Ian Brown, senior research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute, said: "One of the most secure ways you can protect people's information is to not collect any at all, or keeping data for shorter periods of time as it means companies are less likely to lose it and hackers are less likely to get hold of it."

Last week, Yahoo! Announced that it will be putting a new global data retention policy into effect.<br/>
