PhonepayPlus issues warning to network operators

Network operators have been issued with a warning from PhonepayPlus about the abuse of 070 prefixed numbers.

The regulatory body claims that it has received a growing number of complaints from members of the public about the use of these numbers.

Networks operators have been reminded that if they provide premium rate services they are bound by the code of practice issued by PhonepayPlus.

They have been asked to especially take note of the sectors which advise that they must carry out "due diligence" into the service providers they contract with.

It is also stated by the regulator that if any service provider "is found to have breached the Code through misuse of 070 prefixed numbers in a clear attempt to scam consumers, PhonepayPlus will automatically initiate an investigation into the network operator associated with that service".

PhonepayPlus recently launched an investigation into a scam using 070 prefixed numbers by four separate service providers.<br/>
