Energy concerns prompting green IT adoption

Around the world, green IT initiatives are rising to the top of the agenda as pressures grow on big businesses to cut costs and government mandates on carbon emissions come to pass.

That is according to IDC, which found from a survey of 1,500 executives across ten industrial countries that concerns over energy costs remain the biggest driver of eco-friendly IT schemes.

Even as oil prices drop, reduced energy costs were seen as the highest priority for green schemes at 71 per cent of firms, with nearly three quarters (74 per cent) of respondents seeing energy as the number one driver of these programmes.

Vernon Turner, senior vice president of enterprise infrastructure at the research company, explained that enterprises now understand that energy-efficient products can contribute significantly to lowering operating expenses.

"The cost saving associated with reducing power consumption is definitely capturing the attention of IT decision makers around the world," he added.

As well as prompting enterprises to adopt greener IT, tightening budgets could also cause more firms to adopt wireless networks at the expense of wired infrastructure, in order to cut communications costs, Yankee Group has claimed.
