Firms urged to consider long-term benefits of unified communications

Unified communications (UC) systems are vital for companies during the credit crunch as they can significantly improve productivity, it has been claimed.

According to vnunet.com, advocates of the solution also say that it gives staff the tools to make significant gains from team working and gives them access to knowledge throughout the business.

One expert, Mark Deakin, unified communications product manager at Microsoft, said that extra expenditure by IT departments is often heavily scrutinised at the moment.

However, "while the initial instinct may be to slash IT budgets, he suggests concentrating on the long-term gains and seizing opportunities.

"There is a genuine opportunity to enhance existing and new IT resources to drive value through these tough times," Mr Deakin furthered.

Microsoft is currently ahead of IBM in the quest to be the industry's biggest UC provider, reports IT World Canada.<br/>
