Growth in Mobile Broadband Encouraging New Regulations

The rapid adoption of mobile broadband services by businesses and consumers has prompted the telecoms watchdog to consider making changes to UK regulations, it has been revealed.

A report from Analysys Mason, commissioned by the overseer, suggested that dramatic increases in data service usage - predicted to increase further over the next five years - will change the face of mobile communications as roaming broadband becomes more commonplace.

It called for revisions to the regulations governing the access of content from multiple networks in order for business and consumer customers to benefit the most from mobile broadband.

"The current UK regulatory framework governing the delivery of mobile services was established to promote competition in infrastructure-based services that were delivered solely through mobile communications networks," explained Mike Grant, partner at Analysys Mason.

"With users increasingly focused on consumption of content across multiple networks, adjustments to the UK regulatory framework are likely to be required if the benefits of the emerging trends are to be fully realised."

Last month, the analyst predicted that 2.1 billion mobile broadband customers will generate $784 billion (£427 billion) in service revenue by 2015, an increase of 2,400 per cent compared to today's figure.
