Global Server Shipments Up 12% in Second Quarter

Worldwide shipments of servers grew by 12.2 per cent year-over-year in the second quarter of 2008, with global revenues increasing by 5.7 per cent over the same period, it has been revealed.

The latest report from analyst Gartner suggests that total server revenue stood at $13.8 billion (£7.4 billion) for the period lasting from April to June 2008, while shipments reached 2.3 million units during the three-month period.

Jeffrey Hewitt, research vice president at the firm, explained that several developed markets saw continued growth during the period, despite the growing pressure of economic restrictions.

"The most significant driver in the quarter continued to be an upswing in x86 server replacements that started in the first quarter," he said.

"This, coupled with web datacenter build outs and growth in emerging markets, produced solid Q2 results."

Earlier this month, IDC reported that the global microprocessor market reached record levels in the second quarter, with shipments increasing year-over-year by 16.1 per cent - despite the fact that the period is traditionally the slowest of the year in terms of processor demand.<br/>
