Security has Become a Key 'Hosting Issue'

Although availability and up-time are fundamental when choosing a host for a company's website, security is now an essential issue that firms must address.

That is according to IT services company Symantec, which suggested that data encryption, backups, server security and system protection are all things which businesses should be discussing with hosting companies.

Guy Bunker, chief scientists at the company, said: "While availability and uptime are key, security is no longer a secondary issue.

"The other thing that is now important is to ask what their data protection policy is. If it is a shopping site, then it will contain sensitive customer details which need to be protected at all times," he added.

Mr Bunker suggested that companies also enquire as to whether there are business continuity plans in place and if applications are regularly patched for security issues.

According to research by internet services firm Netcraft, six of the top ten UK hosting firms run Linux on their main sites while others use Windows Server 2003 and FreeBSD.
