Businesses Can Easily Protect 'Online Intellectual Property'

Companies can easily protect their intellectual property on the internet if they understand the basics behind the system, the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has claimed.

The government body in charge of patents, designs, trade marks and copyright said that many businesses are making simple errors in protecting their online assets.

According to Lawrence Smith-Higgins, head of business, outreach and education at the IPO, this is surprising because of the vast amount of information that is readily available on the topic.

He said: "It's not very complicated if you know the fundamentals. We meet businesses that make the kind of mistakes that we find surprising given the amount of information that's out there.

"If you're launching a company where the name is very, very important and you're going to build a brand then you ought to take some basic steps to protect that trademark from the word go, rather than establish it in the market place and then fend off copycats."

A report published last month by the CI suggests that .com is the most critical domain for companies looking to foster an online presence. This is followed by country domains such as .co.uk and co.fr.<br/>
