Business Websites 'Improve Customer Retention'

Companies that suffer from website outages will not only lose out on revenue usually generated online but will also lose customers to competing enterprises, it has been warned.

According to IT services company Symantec, the internet is the sole source of income for a growing number of companies and is also the primary channel through which they communicate with their customers.

Guy Bunker, chief scientist at the company, said: "Generally outages are due to either 'broken' hardware or a failed network. Depending on the supplier … these problems can be ameliorated against with a high availability solution.

Such a solution automatically moves a website to a standby or back-up server in the event of a failure, where it can continue to run without issue, he explained.

Recently, supermarket chain Sainsbury's was forced to take its website offline due to a technical failure. It is estimated that the suspension of Sainsburys.co.uk on June 17th 2008 cost the company over £1 million in lost sales alone.<br/>
