NGNs 'Enable Delivery of Advanced Services'

Driven by network, device and media convergence, telecom companies are rolling out next-generation services that provide advanced user experiences, Frost & Sullivan (F&S) has claimed.

According to the analyst, established telecom providers are deploying next-generation networks (NGNs) with new architecture to enable the delivery of enhanced applications and services such as IPTV and fixed-mobile convergence.

F&S suggested that the main reason behind NGN roll-outs is the cost savings to be had through the movement to IP-centric architectures.

Jayesh Easwaramony, director of ICT consulting at the company, said: "Although a NGN rollout for cost savings and service agility is the step in the right direction for all incumbent and integrated telcos, there are still multiple issues.

"There is no size fits all when it comes to transformation initiatives and each operator has to define his vision of his next generation and accordingly shape his business and network strategy."

According to IDC, massive growth in the amount of data being processed by enterprises - thanks in part to the delivery of services such as IPTV - and increasing security requirements are placing many corporate network infrastructures under immense strain.

Charles Kolodgy, research director for security products at the company, said that the networking industry would find itself struggling to cope with future processing and storage demands.<br/>
