Green IT 'a Global Trend'

The deployment of environmentally-conscious IT solutions is a "global phenomenon", an expert has claimed.

Although there is little evidence to suggest the perceptions that organisations have of green IT products and services, analyst IDC said that the segment is garnering increased interest.

As well as satisfying corporate social responsibility and customer demands, green IT can also help improve the efficiencies of IT systems, reducing energy costs and squeezing more performance out of existing systems.

Amit Gupta, country manager for IDC in New Zealand, said: "Within the broader framework of corporate social responsibility and the focus on the environment in general, green IT is a global phenomenon."

Although companies have only been aware of their carbon footprint for the past ten years, IDC noted that the issue has quickly risen up the corporate agenda for many executives.

According to Gartner, green IT - along with cloud computing, social networking platforms, virtualisation and video telepresence - is a leading emerging technology that will transform IT over the next decade.
