Virtualisation could help government reduce IT emissions

The UK government could use virtualisation to reduce the carbon emissions of its IT systems by making them more efficient, it has been claimed.

According to business technology website ComputerWeekly.com, using the software technology could also help the public sector to save money on IT systems replacements and energy bills.

A spokesperson for the website said: "The more sort of advanced thing they could do before most private businesses is virtualisation. This technology means you can have multiple servers running on one so, because you use less hardware you use less power but still have the same functionality.

"You've got ten of the old style servers running on one actual physical server – so it's quite a clever way of using software."

He suggested that any company investing in virtualisation will make their money back in as little as three quarters of a year, through the massive energy and hardware savings that are to be had.

The government recently announced that it aims to make all central departments carbon neutral by 2012. This is to be done through a combination of reducing energy consumption and offsetting the remaining emissions.
