UC Solutions 'Becoming Standard among SMBs'

More than 70 per cent of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are installing, trialing or planning to implement unified communications systems, as they attempt to improve the efficiency of their operations during uncertain economic times.

That is according to research from Converged Communications, which revealed that enterprise interest in UC and internet telephony (IPT) remains strong, despite a slight drop in investment during 2008.

The company analysed various different UC categories including unified messaging, mobile UC, voice over wireless LAN, real-time audio conferencing, web conferencing, desktop videoconferencing and IP contact centres.

"Despite these cutbacks in 2008 spending, decision makers were actually more optimistic about their implementation of UC applications in the future," said Terry White, senior programme director at Converged Communications.

"These SMB decision-makers clearly believe in the potential value of UC applications, but many are expecting their IPT and UC apps vendors to help them identify the best opportunities for realizing this potential value."

Meanwhile, voice over internet (VoIP) provider Inclarity has urged organisations to adopt an IPT backup solution after revealing that a third of British businesses have experienced a phone system breakdown in the last year.
