DLP Prevents Internal and External Leaks

Organisations implementing effective data loss prevention (DLP) solutions experienced 27 percent fewer data loss incidents from internal users than the industry average, and 92 percent fewer from malicious outsiders.

That is according to a new report from Aberdeen, which revealed that the risk of data loss is apparent in a number of different channels, and can range from inadvertent to malicious. The analyst recommended that strategies must take into account all the different was that data can potentially be leaked.

Derek Brink, vice president and research fellow for IT security at the firm, explained that most data loss incidents are unintentional, and occur from simple human error, or employees going around policies in an attempt to better do their jobs.

"The most effective strategies for preventing data loss include a combination of enabling technologies, including data discovery and classification; data monitoring and filtering; and endpoint data protection," he added.

According to DLP specialist Websense, the security risks facing enterprises are growing in size and severity. It estimates that some 90 percent of businesses were targeted by hackers in 2007, and that a third of all organisations have spyware on their networks.<br/>
