RDBMS Interest 'Grew in 2007'

There was steady growth in the market for relational database management systems (RDBMS) in 2007, with several of the largest vendors signaling large gains, research from IDC has revealed.

The analyst estimates that the RDBMS market grew by 12.6 per cent over the course of the year, from $16.7 billion (£8.5 billion) in 2006 to $18.8 billion (£9.6 billion) in 2007.

Carl Olofson, research vice president of information management software at IDC, said that despite the fact the top five RDBMS vendors represent over 90 per cent of the market, there is still plenty of dynamism and growth potential.

He explained that differentiators for smaller vendors include "low-cost, extraordinarily high throughput, embedability, and unusual architectures aimed at niche data management requirements".

IDC's research also indicated that products shipped in 2007 offered greater degrees of flexibility and manageability in deployment. It also noted that technology advancements in areas such as compression, security and unstructured data support are providing RDBMS vendors with new areas to exploit.

Earlier this month, independent software company CA announced the release of CA Access Control Premium Edition, a cross platform creation and management application for role-based access controls for servers.

The solution includes Open Policy Reporting allowing for data feeds to third party RDBMS for a greater level of custom reporting.<br/>
