BSA Urges Malware Legislation

With more than 1.8 million known malware and security risks on the internet, online security and privacy face an unprecedented threat and must be protected with further legislation, a security software provider has claimed.

Speaking to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation in the United States, Vincent Weafer, of Symantec and the Business Software Alliance (BSA), said that provisions should be made to the Counter Spy Act to ensure developers can provide customers with solutions that work.

"These ongoing threats require Congress to empower federal agencies to enforce prohibitions that will help curb the scourge of spyware and harmful adware," he said.

Citing research from Symantec, he added that threats to confidential information made up 68 percent of the volume of malicious code samples in the last half of 2007.

A recent report published by IP network operator Verizon Business found that as many as nine in ten corporate data breaches could be easily avoided with the aid of proper security measures.
