Internet Users Have Responsibility to Protect Themselves Online

Internet users need to ensure that they protect their online privacy as much as they can, if they are to avoid identity fraud and other internet crimes, it has been claimed.

According to Tim Gibbon, co-founder and editor of The Social Media Portal (SMP), a resource mapping various social networks and user generated content, both individual and business internet users need to exercise a 'common sense' approach to stay safe online.

"Ultimately, users need to be vigilant and protect their online privacy as much as they are able, and not rely upon government or otherwise to take sole responsibility," he said. "We all need to have a commonsense approach when using the internet."

Mr Gibbon advised internet users to choose alphanumerical passwords that cannot be guessed, and warned against sharing personal information across digital channels such as instant messenger, email or social networks.

Recently, enterprise security vendor McAfee announced an update for its VirusScan Enterprise range, which affords companies the chance to protect specific mission-critical applications and virtualised environments.<br/>
