Business Intelligence Platform Market 'Continues Growth'

Worldwide business intelligence (BI) platform software revenue rose to $5.1 billion (£2.6 billion) in 2007, 13 per cent higher than the $4.6 billion achieved in 2006 (£2.3 billion), new research has revealed.

According to analyst Gartner, 2007 saw a great deal of activity in the BI market, with the three largest publicly traded BI specialists all being acquired by other organisations.

Dan Sommer, senior research analyst at Gartner, said: "Taking all the consolidation into account, the large stack vendors have raised their market presence during the course of 2007 from just over one fifth of the market to owning close to two thirds by the end of the year."

He added, however, that smaller BI vendors grew faster than the market last year, and suggested that continued innovation would be delivered from new independent vendors entering the market. Gartner also revealed that BI demand was strong in Western Europe.

Last month, the analyst forecast that BI platform revenue levels would reach $5.8 billion (£2.9 billion) in 2008, with organisations increasing their BI spend by 11.2 per cent, on average.<br/>
