UK Firms Leaving Security Holes

British firms are not doing enough to protect themselves from the threat of IT security breaches and data leaks, it has been claimed.

According to a survey carried out by specialist IT distributer Bell Micro, 47 per cent of IT workers believe that their organisations have not yet implemented real time systems that could inform IT departments of security breaches.

Furthermore, 74 per cent of respondents said that they were concerned about rogue connections to the company network from customer and contractor devices, while 43 per cent admitted that they are unable to enforce an encryption policy among staff for data being stored on portable devices.

"What these findings show is that there is still a paramount need to increase attention to data management and protection in an organisation," said Steve Browell, general manager of security at Bell Micro.

"How data is encrypted, moved and stored must move up the business agenda, otherwise we are just leaving the gates wide open for the horse to bolt. The tools are already available but vendors, distributors and resellers alike must come together to deliver better education to customers," he added.

Recently, enterprise IT security vendor announced the release of a new encrypted USB drive designed to prevent data loss. The portable device includes security authentication, two-factor encryption with biometric security, and password protection.<br/>
