Virtualised Storage & Desktops 'Deliver Greater Efficiency'

With the rapid growth of virtualisation over the past few years, it is now seen by companies as an essential part of IT infrastructure strategy, used to increase desktop, server and storage utilisation, a new study has found.

According to a survey of 175 global organisations by Aberdeen, virtualisation is seen as a key enabler in infrastructure and data consolidation strategies, while also providing reduced operating costs and improved infrastructure efficiency.

The survey indicated that 73 per cent of best-in-class companies have formal practices in place for moving virtualised applications from testing to production, while 92 per cent have trained administrators in managing virtual environments.

"Virtualisation has benefits in consolidating servers and applications, but can also enable an activity that is critical to business survival, that of disaster recovery," added Jeffrey Hill, senior research analyst, Aberdeen. <br/>"Virtualisation helps make a disaster recovery infrastructure easier to implement and more affordable."

A survey conducted in May by technology website IT Week indicated that UK IT managers expect virtualisation to have the most impact on their organisations out of all emerging technologies, in the next several years.

Over half of those questioned expected virtualisation to be the most disruptive new technology, while 43 per cent cited virtual working and 38 per cent picked green IT.<br/>
