Security Software Market 'Still Growing'

The global security software market posted revenues of $10.4 billion (£5.3 billion) in 2007, an increase of 19.8 per cent over the 2006 figure of $8.7 billion (£4.5 billion), according to Gartner.

The analyst explained that there has been an increasing shift towards offering appliance-based products, particularly within e-mail security and secure web gateway market segments.

Ruggero Contu, principal research analyst at Gartner, explained that double digit growth rate enjoyed by the security market in 2007 was significantly higher than the seven per cent it experienced in 2006.

"Compliance, data leakage and privacy issues, along with the need to tackle the fast evolving and sophisticated threat environment, are among the major drivers fuelling the growth of spending on security," he added.

Meanwhile, IDC recently reported that the Western European market for security appliances reached $332 million (£170 million) in the first quarter of 2008, an 8.1 per cent increase over the same quarter last year.

It concluded that the market is being driven by UTM (Unified Threat Management), content management and IPS (Intrusion Prevention Systems).<br/>
