Online ID Fraud 'Easy for Criminals'

ID fraud is an easy way for criminals to steal money from business and consumer internet users, it has been claimed.

Neil Munroe, external affairs director at credit firm Equifax, said that stealing credit details via phishing scams and malicious code is much easier and requires less effort than any sort of physical theft, be it corporate or otherwise.

He warned that information security managers face a tough challenges in protecting their organisation's data resources, pointing to the fact that there is now so much more information, readily available through the internet, that needs securing.

"In this day and age we are all a lot more credit active and a lot more active on the web and fraudsters have realised that there is a lot of information around that they could get," he added.

According to a report by fraud prevention service CIFAS, cases of identity fraud have increased drastically over the last decade, rising from 9,000 in 1999 to more than 90,000 in 2006.<br/>
