PC Upgrades 'Can Reduce Environmental Damage'

Home consumers and small businesses can save money and reduce their electronic waste by choosing to replace their existing PCs rather than throwing them away and starting again.

That is according The TechGuys, a service that provides technical advice and installation support for new and old technology. It warned that some 1.8 million tonnes of electronic waste is produced in the UK every year.

In a joint interview with time management specialist Clare Evans, Tim Fairs, from The Tech Guys, explained that the look and interface of PCs has remained fairly constant over time, adding that it is only the system's innards that need to be updated regularly.

"We're always told these days to be much more conscious about the environment, and the impact that we all have on saving the planet," he said.

"Running a health check on an annual basis will mean that your PC is running to its optimum. And that can mean sticking with what you’ve got, rather than having to change your PC every two or three years."

According to a survey by The TechGuys, one in five people claim to have hit their desk due to frustration caused by slow PCs, leading to nearly half a million broken monitors.
