ISPs Should Get Permission for Use of Traffic Data

Permission should be sought from people who surf the web by internet service providers (ISPs) which want to use their traffic data is used, a pressure group based in the US has argued.

The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) has said that internet users should be able to have a choice in whether they are targeted with adverts based on their browsing preferences.

In addition, CDT has also suggested that as soon as an internet customer has signalled that they no longer wish for their data to be collected, this should be actioned by the ISP.

In a statement the organisation said: "CDT suggests that ISPs engaged in such practices be required to provide unavoidable notice and obtain affirmative, express opt-in consent."

CDT made its comments in the run-up to updates made by the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) to its self-regulatory code of conduct for online behavioural advertising.

"We had hoped that the NAI would regularly update its principles and, in recent years, as technological evolution has accelerated and consolidation among online advertising companies has taken hold, we have urged the NAI to revisit its principles to resolve the issues present in the original version and to address emerging issues in the marketplace," CDT added.
