Mobile Commerce Utilised by the US

The ease with which commerce can be conducted via mobile devices has been seized upon by the US.

According to a new survey, nine million people have used their mobile handsets to purchase goods or services in the States.

The study, conducted by Nielsen Mobile, found that five million mobile phone users accessed shopping and auction sites last month.

This represents an increase of 73 percent when compared to the same month last year.

It was also revealed that men are more likely to shop via mobile websites than women, with 4.9 million men saying they have bought something via their phone compared to 4.3 million women.

In addition, age played a factor in the popularity of mobile commerce, with people aged between 25 and 34 the most likely to buy something over a mobile site. This compares to 3.6 per cent of all mobile subscribers in the US as a whole.

Commenting on the findings, Nic Covey, director of insights at Nielsen Mobile, said: "For many of the millions of consumers who are already shopping online or over landline phones, mobile commerce is an obvious and useful extension."<br/>
