Apple's iPhone 3G Targetted at Enterprises

At its Worldwide Developers Conference this week, Apple unveiled the second iteration of its popular iPhone device, which includes 3G and ActiveSync support for Microsoft Exchange Servers.

The iPhone 3G is being targeted towards enterprises by Apple, and is also supported by a flexible software development kit (SDK) for the creation of third party business applications. As well as 3G support, it also has built-in GPS capability, and includes 8GB or 16GB of flash storage.

Although pricing has yet to be confirmed by O2, which will carry the phone in the UK from July, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs took great pains to explain that the phone will enable users to get push mail from their corporate networks and allow administrators to wipe the device remotely if lost.

The new device will also have support for connection to secured virtual private networks (VPNS) and range of different document types, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Although businesses have been reluctant to adopt the original iPhone, particularly because of the security issues that surround it, manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM), which has a large stake in the corporate smartphone market because of its BlackBerry range, is alleged to be developing a new device to rival Apple.

RIM's new phone is rumoured to include a touch screen and camera, as well as support for a wide range of enterprise features. <br/>
