McAfee Releases Protection for Mission-Critical Applications

Enterprise security provider McAfee has announced upgrades to its VirusScan Enterprise range designed to provide greater protection for business-critical applications and virtualised environments.

The new products, which also support a wider range of storage systems, focus on end-to-end security, and reflect the changing ways that security threats are impacting enterprises, moving away from general viruses to more targeted attacks exploiting OS and application vulnerabilities, McAfee explained.

Speaking to InternetNews.com, Malav Patel, group product marketing manager for end point security at McAfee, said: "Mission-critical applications once were run in silo secured environments. But now they're being expanded beyond those silos and as a result they can be exposed to outside attack."

In terms of virtualisation, it explained that similar vulnerabilities occur because of vast amounts of offline virtual images that are being stored by enterprises. As these remain dormant, they miss vital security updates and patches, something that the McAfee solution ensures against.

Earlier this month, McAfee released a new USB drive designed to prevent data loss. McAfee Encrypted USB, the company's first foray into hardware, includes special security authentication and two-factor encryption including biometric security, in addition to passwords. It supports external USB hard drives up to 750GB.<br/>
