PC Market Driven by Portable Devices

Global PC shipments are expected to reach 310 million units in 2008, growing by 15.2 per cent compared to last year, according to IDC.

The analyst predicted that growth will remain in the double-digits until 2010 then remain in high single digits through to 2012, with annual shipments reaching over 472 million by that year.

It estimated that volume growth, combined with growing shipments of more expensive portable PCs, would offset falling average prices, with the total value of shipments expected to grow by 9.6 per cent in 2008, to $286 billion (£146 billion), then by five per cent annually from 2009 to 2012.

"Even as the PC market grapples with slower growth in more developed markets, adoption cycles for new operating systems, processors, and other components, and convergence of media and devices, the success of portable PCs continues to drive the market," said Loren Loverde, of IDC.

Last month, research company Gartner concluded that PC shipments in Western Europe increased year-over-year by 14.1 per cent in the first quarter of 2008, to total 15.2 million units, with 3.1 million units being shipped in the UK.<br/>
