Majority of Malware 'from Legitimate Websites'

Over two thirds of all web-based malware is now being found on legitimate websites, a new report from Scansafe has revealed.

The software security firm warned that this represents a rise of 407 per cent in the amount of malware found on legitimate sites that have been compromised, when compared with May 2007.

It explained that SQL injection attacks are the most common way in which these sites become compromised with malicious code. The method of attack allows hackers to steal passwords and gain 'backdoor' access to users' computers.

According to Scansafe, there has been a 220 per cent increase in the different kinds of web-based malware in the last year, with authentication-bypass and password stealing malware growing by 855 per cent over last year.

Recently, security firm BitDefender revealed that there is a growing trend among internet criminals to use malware packers to attack business enterprises online with recycled malicious code.

The firm warned that the same malicious software packer was used in three of the biggest malware attacks in April 2008, as hackers change the way that their attacks are put together.<br/>
