Trojans 'Top Malware Threat in May'

Trojans were the most dangerous form of malicious code seen in May 2008, according to research by IT security specialist BitDefender.

A list by the firm of the top ten internet threats for the month was topped by a Trojan embedded in a pop-up (Trojan.Clicker.CM), designed to antivirus blocker codes.

A Trojan downloader (Trojan.Downloader.WMA.Wimad.N) set to install malware on a user's computer to steal personal information was in second place.

Third place went to a Trojan designed to prevent BitDefender software from updating its virus definitions (Trojan.Qhost.AQR), evidence of the length to which hackers will go to attempt to avoid antivirus countermeasures.

Sorin Dudea, BitDefender analyst, said: "This just goes to show that it doesn't pay off to turn off your protection – not even for a little while."

According to web security firm ScanSafe, the threat to enterprises of their websites being compromised has risen drastically this year, with 68 percent of all blocked malware in May originated from legitimate sites, up 407 percent compared to the same period last year.
