BT to Cut Carbon Emissions Drastically by 2016

Telecoms company BT has announced plans to reduce its 1996 level carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 80 per cent by 2016.

The company said that it will rely on wind farms to produce a quarter of its UK power, adding that it intends to build the largest wind-power project outside of the energy sector for that direct purpose.

As of 2008, BT has already reduced its UK 1996 level carbon emissions by 58 per cent, but said that it would now focus on its global operations.

Among the plans, it will upgrade its 90 datacentres worldwide by March 2009, cutting their power-consumption by as much as 60 per cent through the use of fresh air cooling and AC-DC power conversion.

Dr Chris Tuppen, director of sustainable development at the company, said in a statement: "The Climate Stabilisation Intensity target creates a relationship between BT's CO2 emissions and its financial performance, so that they become interdependent."

"It is a powerful tool for embedding sustainability into organisations worldwide, and critical in effecting change."

BT urged its corporate clients to cut their own carbon emissions along with the firm. The Climate Stabilisation Intensity target is endorsed by the United Nations, and enables companies to set reduction targets based on measurements of their pre-existing emission levels.
