2.4 Billion Bluetooth-Enabled Devices to Ship in 2013

A new report from ABI Research highlights predictions that nearly 2.4 billion units of Bluetooth-enabled equipment will ship around the world in 2013.

According to the analyst, more than half of these devices will be mobile handsets. Taken with accompanying headsets, this segment will account for more than 75 per cent of the total market.

It added that Bluetooth is also increasingly being integrated into notebooks, PDAs, desktop PCs, human interface devices such as keyboards, automotive products, printers and add-in cards.

With this ubiquity comes opportunity for the nascent technology, explained ABI Research senior analyst Douglas McEuen.

"Integration is a key trend in Bluetooth markets. Designers are saying 'Bluetooth is in everything, so what else can we add to the Bluetooth chip?' GPS is a popular candidate, as is FM radio," he added.

Mr McEuen also noted how integration of Bluetooth with 802.11 wireless (Wi-Fi) standards was also increasing the speed and range of the technology, in the same way as ultra-wideband.

Recently, ABI Research claimed that business mobile users would benefit from the implementation of Bluetooth with Wi-Fi, also known as 'High Speed Bluetooth'. The analyst claimed the combination technology would cater to increasing needs for the transmission of large data files.
