European Server Market 'Boosted by Virtualisation'

The enterprise server market for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) saw revenue increase by 4.8 per cent year-over-year to $4.4 billion (£2.3 billion) in the first quarter of 2008, despite economic pressures.

According to IDC, shipments increased by 8.7 per cent year-over-year to 680,000 in the first quarter. Western Europe saw revenue increases of 2.8 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The analyst explained that virtualisation was a key driving force in the market, as organisations search for increased management and automation.

Beatriz Valle, research analyst at the company, explained: "Processor technologies and form factors such as multicore and blade are pushing virtualization to the forefront, and vendors are playing catch-up to sell solutions to the midmarket that exploit these technologies."

IDC said that virtualisation is being deployed to tackle server sprawl and also has relevance in the field of disaster recovery, a segment which software vendors are increasingly targeting.

Last month, analyst Gartner released a forecast indicating that virtualisation will come to be a disruptive technology in the global space operating system (OS) space, and could eventually lead to the displacement of OS as a traditional infrastructure layer.
