Global PC Microprocessor Market Exhibits Year-on-Year Growth

While global shipments of PC microprocessors may have slowed in the first quarter of 2008 compared to the previous quarter, they increased by 25.7 per cent year-over-year, according to IDC.

The analyst explained that the first quarter traditionally sees slowdown in the PC microprocessor market, but added that revenue had also increased in the fourth quarter year-over-year by 15.9 per cent.

It noted that growth over the last year had been driven primarily by shipments of processors designed for mobile PCs and servers, with microprocessor shipments for mobile PCs having increased by 42.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2008, compared to the same period last year.

Shane Rau, director of PC semiconductor research at IDC, explained: "Total worldwide market shipments tend to decline from fourth quarter to first quarter because of seasonal demand patterns."

Meanwhile, a separate report from analyst Gartner has forecast that the worldwide semiconductor market will grow by 4.6 per cent in 2008, noting that electronics and semiconductor vendors are not predicting market conditions to worsen in the first half of 2008.<br/>
