SME Workers 'Pose top Security Threat'

Smaller businesses without dedicated IT departments are more likely to come to risk as a result of their employees' actions, it has been reported.

According to vnunet.com, a new survey from IT security company Trend Micro revealed that employees at smaller firms are more likely to check personal email, launch downloaded executable files and make online purchases on work systems.

Surveying staff from the UK, Germany, Japan and the United States, the firm concluded that this is due to a lack of IT support and education in smaller firms, which are 50 per cent less likely to have on-site IT support.

Steve Quane, of Trend Micro, told the website: "These results tell me that small businesses often lack the resources and manpower to maintain complicated security solutions."

Last month, a survey by IT services provider Unisys revealed that identity theft and card fraud are the most prevalent online security concerns in the UK. It found that 86 per cent of people in Britain are worried about misuse of their personal data.
