Adobe Follows Google in Offering Hosted Documents

Software developer Adobe is attempting to secure itself a slice of the online documents market by offering a new service similar Google Docs, it has been reported.

Acrobat.com includes the Adobe Buzzword word processor, which was launched earlier this year, and allows users to create, store and share their documents online.

Taking advantage of its position in the PDF market, Adobe has also given users the ability to turn up to five documents into a single PDF using an online version of the firm's new Acrobat 9 software.

Currently in public beta stage, the Adobe hosted service does differ from those provided by the likes of Google and Microsoft in that it focuses on the creation and manipulation of PDFs, rather than spreadsheets and databases, according to website CIO.co.uk.

Adobe is also preparing to launch a traditional version of its Acrobat 9 document viewing software, which will now be able to embed videos created using Adobe's Flash video software.

This is the first new version of Acrobat since November 2006, a year after Adobe purchased Flash creator Macromedia.
