Enterprise 2.0 Driven by Improved Collaboration

The adoption of web 2.0 technologies, such as social networks, blogs and mashups, by enterprises is being encouraged by the promise of increased collaboration with employees and customers.

That is according to the results of a new survey, commissioned by enterprise 2.0 solutions provider WorkLight, which indicated that collaboration is the primary reason for adopting new internet technologies among 71 per cent of firms.

David Lavenda, vice president of marketing and product strategy at WorkLight, noted: "Social networks are becoming an attractive business tool for major organisations, with companies looking to implement these technologies for both their employees and customers.

"It's consumer technologies that are driving companies to adopt these applications - tools like Facebook, iGoogle and other popular Internet services we all use at home," he added.

Although more than half of survey respondents said they are permitted to offer staff access to social networking sites from work, 41 per cent added that security remains their primary concern in doing so.

According to a report by research company AIIM, 44 per cent of organisations believe that enterprise 2.0 applications are important to their business, despite the fact that 74 per cent do not have a clear understanding of what these technologies actually do.
