Enterprises 'Fuelling Disc Storage System Capacity Growth'

Demand for storage systems will increase through to 2012 as businesses emerge with a more content-centric outlook, it has been predicted.

According to IDC, worldwide disk storage systems capacity shipments will grow at a compound annual growth rate of close to 53 per cent from 2007 to 2012, with spending surpassing $34 billion (£17.3 billion) in 2012.

The analyst said that growth will be driven by the digitisation of content, disk-based data protection and long-term data retention, adding that enterprises will also look to improve storage utilisation, through technologies such as data deduplication and thin provisioning.

"New enterprise datacenter designs based on the principles of massive consolidation, extensive virtualization, and unified connectivity will drive new storage systems designs," sid Natalya Yezhkova, research manager for storage at IDC.

"The most important new force is the emergence of content-rich business applications in areas such as telecommunications, media/entertainment, and web 2.0."

In a separate report published this month, IDC forecast that global demand for hard disk drives will increase by nine per cent between 2007 and 2012,with flash-based solid state disk drives (SSDs) limiting HDD demand in some markets.
